AEC – CPRI - RSoP Project
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MoU) SIGNED BETWEEN CENTRAL POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CPRI), BANGALORE and ARUNAI ENGINEERING COLLEGE(AEC), TIRUVANNAMALAI, TAMILNADU for the project on “Design, Development and Deployment of Grid Interfaced Power Conversion Unit for Solar –Wind Power Generation Systems” under RSoP scheme of Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India.
CPRI & Relevance of RSoP in Indian Power Sector:
The Research Scheme on Power popularly (RSoP) was initiated by Ministry of Power, Government of India in 1961. The scheme is being administered by Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), An autonomous society under Ministry of Power, Government of India since 2001.The scheme basically aims to provide fund for carrying out need based research in power sector including solving of operational problems encountered in the power system.
Power Sector in India is characterized by multi-dimensional complexity. Many organizations are carrying out research in different areas of power sector. Research programmes are to be made more optimal & result oriented with the available limited resources. Over the years, the RSoP has evolved as a key instrument to deal with the operational and local specific issues of state level power utilities. In many of these initiatives, the R&D element is comparatively less. Consequently the average investment in any RSoP project is not much. Nonetheless, it has kept the innovative spirit alive at the utility level in its efforts to find out local specific solutions.
Arunai Engineering College, Tiruvannamalai has been selected for the establishment of CORE in the area of “ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS”. The CORE has been functioning since 2009.
AEC & Relevance of R & D project
Energy is one of the key infrastructural requirements needed to realize high economic, sustained and inclusive growth of a country. The key objective is to meet the growing demand of energy in an efficient, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable manner. Distributed generation (DG) systems based on renewable energy resources play an important role in electric power systems for addressing energy security needs and sustainable development
Renewables contribute around 15% to the total grid power installed capacity in the country in an environmentally benign manner. The estimated share of these resources in electrical networks will increase significantly in the near future by providing different benefits like cost reduction, reliability of main grid, and emission reduction.
Extracting maximum power from solar and wind systems and feeding the grid with high-quality electricity are two main objectives of the project. Real time data of the entire system can be analyzed and validated. Reliability concerns of the proposed work will be analyzed before feasibility, replicability and commercialization. Emphasis will be made on the associating industry through technology transfer for development and deployment to rapid scale up the capacity and innovation of the proposed hybrid power generation systems.
The EEE department of our institution is offering an Under Graduate (UG) and two Post Graduate (PG) programmes in Power Electronics & Drives and Embedded System Technologies. Both UG and PG programmes of the department have been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi NBA, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), New Delhi and affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. So far, the PG programme of the Department has produced three University gold medalists, since inception
